I recently participated in a test screening for the new Megan Fox flick, Jennifer's Body. A test screening is where the producers/director show what is supposed to be the final cut of the film before they send it to the studio, to see audience's reactions. I've written two reviews, one sans spoilers, and one that basically gives away the whole movie. Here's the spoiler free one:
Jennifer's Body, written by Juno writer, Diablo Cody, is arguably the best movie of the year. It's funny, it's scary, it's sexy. It's the whole package. In case you didn't know, Jennifer's Body centers around small town (called Devil's Kettle, go figure) girl, Jennifer Check (Megan Fox), captain of her high school's flag team and the object of every guy's affection. She's
funny, she's sexy and she does her charity! She's best friends with Anita 'Needy' Lesnicki (Amanda Seyfried), the school's resident dork, who's dating the drummer of a less than impressive school rock band (Johnny Simmons). After a violent ritual is performed on her by an actual rock band (ironically called Low Shoulder)'s lead singer (Adam Brody) in order for them to get a record deal, Jennifer starts acting weird and the killings start. Not just killings, cannibalistic killings that leaves the victim, and I quote, 'looking like lasagna with teeth', and Jennifer always seems to be around
the victim right before the 'feeding'. Needy then figures out that Jennifer has something to do with the weird happenings, and after she taregets her boyfriend, tries to take her down. Alot of critics have been doubting Megan Fox's acting, well in the words of said bombshell, f*** 'em! Fox displays an array of talents in this flick, she's sexy when she needs to be, scary when she needs to be, and just all around funny, delivering the witty remarks, courtesy of [Diablo] Cody, with perfect comedic timing. Amanda Seyfried has displayed her acting chops quite nicely in a couple of previous films (Mamma Mia!, Mean Girls) but she really shines in this one. While Fox is cold, sexy and confident (a la Jolie in Wanted), Seyfried is emotional, awkward and 'socially retarded', which is a stretch from her previously mentioned film roles. Diablo Cody delivers another outstanding script, that delivers the laughs and the jumps, all in one. The movie's filled with quotes you will soon see in teens' graphic tees, as well as heaps and heaps of gore to satisfy your twisted needs. Karyn Kusama, the director, does a good job bringing Diablo's vision to life, with a
cinamatic atmosphere, and a few Exorcist-like effects to darken up the mood. All in all, a great movie, that shouldn't be taken too seriously, to realize it's potential. Go into the theater expecting anything and everything, because that is what this movie offers.
